Course Overview
Outdoor Leadership is an outdoor adventure class. We will be learning and practicing the necessary skills to backpack, rock climb, paddle kayaks, navigate single-track trails on mountain bikes, cook in the wilderness, and more! This is a participation-based experiential course, and students need to show up ready to be active rain or shine.
Expectations:
- Be safe and respectful.
- Show up on time, including days when we leave at lunch.
- Keep a weekly journal for activity reflections and reading responses.
- Have fun!
Grading:
Grades are based entirely on participation in the daily class and completion of any homework assignments. Show up on time and prepared to be active.
Specific skills and activities:
Slack line
Yoga/stretching/calisthenics
Group challenge course facilitation
Rock climbing and belaying
Kayaking: river (non-whitewater), estuary, and ocean paddling
Mountain biking: riding skills, endurance and bike maintenance
Backpacking: navigation, camp-craft (leave no trace, cooking, tents, tarps, etc…)
Backcountry winter travel and play: snowshoeing, avalanche awareness, snowboarding
Backcountry safety and first aid
General Weekly Schedule:
- Mondays: Workouts, yoga, and preparation days
- Wednesdays and Fridays: Specific skills, readings, lectures, workouts and short local outings (cycling, hiking, trail running, etc..). 1-2 times a month we will have bigger outings on a Wednesday or Friday. We will meet at the start of lunch for these outings, and they will be scheduled on the Outdoor Leadership calendar.
